Glossary

AML - Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, also known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  A cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells.

Neutrophils are white blood cells, first responders to the site of infection. Without neutrophils, there is no immune system.

Platelets are small, clear cell fragments that make up a very small percentage of the volume of blood. They clump together and form clots to prevent excessive bleeding.

Red Blood Cells are the most numerous blood cell. They make up about 40% of our total blood volume, a measure called the hematocrit. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all tissues throughout the body.

Chimera - the condition of two or more different populations of genetically distinct cells existing within one animal.
